In this book, I present a comprehensive view – both critical and historical – of leading academic works related to the most pervasive model in finance, the random walk model from the XIXth century to today. Using the mathematical hypothesis of the random walk model as a backbone for entering the financial history, I trace the intellectual history of random walk model in finance (origins, statistical tests, dominating position) and I describe the scientific controversies which permanently arise on the model since the beginning.

The contributions of individual chapters are focused on the consequences of the random walk hypothesis for financial representations and professional practices. More precisely, the influence of Gaussian distribution on Modern Portfolio Theory, the influence of Brownian representation on option pricing theory. The analysis combines historical and epistemological approaches – tied together to enter financial techniques. An emphasis is given about the conflict between pro and con of the continuous representation of uncertainty for modelling stock market fluctuations. Historical epistemology sheds light on this enigma, one of the causes of the 2008 financial crisis.
